Recovering a site from search penalties after low-quality SEO

A sharp traffic drop is more often a technical outage or an algorithm update than a penalty. Here is how to diagnose before you start treating.

Three causes of a drop and how to tell them apart

First, a technical outage: the site serving 5xx, a robots.txt shipped with Disallow: /, an expired SSL certificate, URLs changed without redirects. The signature is an abrupt fall over one or two days affecting every page at once.

Second, manual actions. The signature is unambiguous: a notice in the Manual Actions section of Search Console or a message in Yandex.Webmaster. No notice means no manual penalty — this is not a matter for guesswork.

Third, an algorithmic decline. The signature: the drop coincides with a known update, affects a subset of queries and unfolds gradually over a week or two. There is no notification, and nothing to 'lift' — only the cause can be removed.

Manual actions: the order of work

The notice names the violation type: unnatural links to the site, unnatural links from the site, user-generated spam, hidden text, doorways, hacked content. The type determines what to fix.

Check the scope: a penalty may cover the whole site or specific sections. A partial action often points at one folder — a user profile section overrun by spam, for instance.

Once the cause is removed, submit a reconsideration request describing what was done. The description must be specific: which links were removed, which disavowed, what changed in the template. A boilerplate reply gets rejected and costs weeks.

Cleaning the link profile

Export links from Search Console's Links report, from Yandex.Webmaster and from an external service such as Ahrefs. Merge by domain: work with donors, not individual URLs.

Classify donors into three groups: obvious spam (networks, doorways, zero-traffic sites with thousands of outbound links), questionable, and legitimate. For the first group, first attempt removal through site owners — Google treats removal efforts as evidence of good faith.

Disavow the remaining spam through the Search Console tool. The format is domain:example.com lines to reject a whole domain. Note that the uploaded file replaces the previous one entirely, so keep the master copy and upload it in full.

Algorithmic decline: what actually helps

Identify which pages and queries lost ground. Compare the Performance report a month before and after the drop, grouped by page. If only informational articles fell while commercial pages held, the cause is content quality rather than links.

Typical causes after low-quality 'promotion': mass-generated keyword pages, over-optimised copy with unnatural density, doorway regional clones, hidden text blocks and behaviour manipulation.

The remedy is removal or rework, not cosmetics. Pages built purely for engines and useful to nobody are better deleted with 410 or merged into good ones. Retained ballast slows recovery for the whole domain.

Recovery timelines

Manual actions are lifted after a successful review, usually one to three weeks after submission. Rankings do not return instantly and rarely return in full.

Algorithmic recovery depends on the site being reassessed, which can take months. Some systems re-evaluate continuously, others only at the next major update. Promises to 'lift the penalty in two weeks' have no basis.

In Yandex, sanctions for behaviour manipulation have historically taken longer to lift and require the activity to stop completely. There is no halfway state: continuing manipulation resets progress.

Avoiding a repeat

Write into the contractor agreement a ban on exchange-bought links, unreviewed page generation and any behaviour-simulation service. Require a monthly list of placements.

Set up monitoring: a weekly export of newly referring domains, alerts on sudden growth in indexed page count, and checks on robots.txt availability and homepage response codes.

Run a short content audit quarterly: which pages were created, by whom, and whether they earn traffic. That is cheaper than untangling a year of work by a careless contractor.
