Google Ads or social media ads: where to put your first budget

Google Ads and social ads work with different demand: one catches someone already searching for a solution, the other creates interest where none existed yet. Picking the wrong channel is the most common way to burn a first budget.

Google Ads: demand that already exists

Search ads show to someone who typed the query themselves — they already recognise the need and are looking for who to buy from. This is the hottest traffic, and click price reflects exactly that.

The limit is that Google Ads only works where explicit search demand exists. If a product is new and nobody knows it exists yet, nobody searches for it, and the campaign simply won't get impressions.

Social ads: demand that must be created

Instagram and Telegram ads target by interest and behaviour rather than query, letting you promote a product nobody is asking about yet and build brand recognition for visually appealing goods.

The trade-off: the person wasn't searching for you at that moment, so first-touch conversion is usually lower and the path to purchase longer.

How to know your demand type

A simple test: search Google for your service name. Lots of results with competitors already advertising means demand is formed and Google Ads will deliver fast. Almost no results means the market isn't searching yet and social is the more logical first channel.

Price and decision cycle matter too: cheap, emotional purchases sell well through social visuals. Expensive, considered services — legal, medical, construction — almost always convert better from search.

The honest verdict

Limited budget, need a fast test: start with the channel where your Google check shows existing demand. Don't split a small first budget across both — neither gathers enough data to learn from.

After first sales and clarity on where real customers came from, add the second channel: Google Ads for hot demand plus social for recognition tends to outperform either alone over time.
